Troubleshooting Guide: Why Your Packing Tape Isn't Sticking to Boxes Anymore

 However, if you've noticed that your packing tape isn't sticking to your boxes as effectively as it used to, it can be frustrating and raise concerns about the integrity of your packaging.

1. Surface Preparation:  

One of the most common reasons for packing tape failure is inadequate surface preparation. Before applying tape, ensure that the surface of the box is clean and free from dust, dirt, or moisture. 

Dust and debris can compromise the tape's ability to stick, leading to potential issues during transportation. 

2. Temperature and Humidity: 

Extreme temperature and humidity levels can negatively impact the adhesive properties of packing tape. If you are packing in a cold or humid environment, consider warming up the tape and the boxes before application. 

Conversely, in hot conditions, try to keep the tape and boxes cool to prevent the adhesive from becoming too sticky.

Check when your last purchase was and ask the supplier for the expiration date. Consider storing your tape in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight to extend its effectiveness. 

5. Application Technique: 

Proper application technique is crucial for ensuring the tape adheres securely to your boxes. 

When applying the tape, press it firmly against the surface, smoothing out any air bubbles or wrinkles. 

Use a dispenser to apply even pressure and create a tight seal. Pay attention to the edges and corners of the boxes, as these areas are more prone to lifting. 

6. Carton Board Grade: 

Speak to your supplier of cardboard boxes to see whether there have been any changes in the board grade of the cartons. 

On rare occasions, recycled papers could react with the adhesive on the packing tape and cause the tape to peel.

For large volume users of packing tape, often a small upgrade in the quality of papers used for the cartons can be more cost effective than upgrading the tape.
