An honest Examination of Water Activated Paper Tape (Gummed Paper Tape) vs. BOPP Plastic Packaging Tape

Selecting the right packaging tape is a critical decision for businesses aiming to secure and protect their shipments. Among the diverse options available, two contenders, Water Activated Paper Tape (Gummed Paper Tape) and BOPP Plastic Packaging Tape, stand out. In this assessment, we delve into the features, benefits, and drawbacks of each to guide you in making an informed decision for your packaging needs.

Water Activated Paper Tape:

Gummed Paper Tape

Water-activated paper tape, commonly known as gummed paper tape, has been a traditional choice for packaging. Many people in the marketplace use initialism like GPT or WAPT to describe this tape. It is composed of paper and an adhesive that is activated by water. This tape is typically dispensed through a water-activated tape dispenser.

Advantages of Water Activated Paper Tape:

  1. Environmentally Friendly: Water-activated paper tape is often considered more environmentally friendly than its plastic counterparts. It is biodegradable and recyclable, contributing to sustainability efforts.

  1. Tamper-Evident: The adhesive on water-activated paper tape forms a strong bond with the carton, making it tamper-evident. Any attempt to open or tamper with the package is easily noticeable.

  1. Custom Printing Options: Businesses can custom print their logos or messages on water-activated paper tape, enhancing brand visibility and providing a professional appearance.

  1. Reinforced: You can get a reinforced option which provides an almost unbreakable seal. One strip of this tape is enough to seal a carton.

  1. Aesthetics: Arguably the paper tape looks a lot neater and more appealing than its plastic alternatives.

Drawbacks of Water Activated Paper Tape:

  1. Speed: Activating the adhesive with water can be time-consuming compared to the quick application of some plastic tapes, which may be a consideration for high-volume operations. You have to change your processes and sometimes your equipment in your packing area to ensure that the efficiencies of this system are realised.

  1. Cost: The price per meter of water activated tape can be up to five times the price of a standard acrylic plastic packaging tape. In most cases less tape is needed using this application, so a trial is always recommended.

  1. Application: Where plastic packaging tapes can be used for many different applications, Water Activated Paper Tape is only really for carton sealing.

BOPP Plastic Packaging Tape:

BOPP Tape

Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) plastic packaging tape (parcel tape) is a widely used alternative to paper-based options. This tape is the most popular tape in the UK market currently, and usually comes with three different adhesives: solvent (natural rubber), hotmelt and acrylic. It is known for its strength, durability, and versatility in various packaging applications.

Advantages of BOPP Plastic Packaging Tape:

  1. Water-Resistant: Unlike water-activated paper tape, BOPP plastic tape is resistant to water, providing added protection to packages during transit and storage.

  1. Speed: BOPP tape can be applied swiftly, making it suitable for high-volume packaging operations where efficiency is crucial.

  1. Versatility: BOPP plastic tape adheres well to various surfaces, making it suitable for a wide range of packaging materials, including cardboard, plastic, and metal.

  1. Roll Size: With the film being much thinner than the paper tape alternatives, there is usually up to twice the length on a roll of BOPP tape.

  1. Custom Printing: Like paper tape, you can have up to eight colours printed on to BOPP packaging tape.

  1. Application: You can use BOPP tape for almost any application. Bundling, carton sealing, reinforcing packages, securing pallets etc. It is recommended that you use it with a dispenser – these are usually lightweight and easy to use.

Drawbacks of BOPP Plastic Packaging Tape:

  1. Environmental Concerns: BOPP plastic tape is not biodegradable and can contribute to plastic waste issues. Businesses aiming for eco-friendly packaging solutions may find this a significant drawback.

  1. Tampering Risk: Although BOPP tape provides a strong seal, it may not be as tamper-evident as water-activated paper tape, potentially posing a security risk.

  1. Temperature: Often more susceptible to temperature changes which can change the performance dramatically.

Choosing between Water Activated Paper Tape and BOPP Plastic Packaging Tape involves a careful consideration of priorities. If environmental sustainability, tamper-evident features, and brand appeal are paramount, water-activated paper tape may be the preferred option. However, for businesses prioritising quick application, multiple uses and versatility, BOPP plastic packaging tape may prove to be the more practical choice. Ultimately, the decision rests on the specific needs and values of your business. At Plus Packaging we can come and conduct an honest, free assessment of the goods you are dispatching to assist you in your decision. Contact us at sales@pluspkg.com or 0151 486 4800.
